World-Class Marine Energy Testing & Facilities

From the benchtop to the Pacific Ocean, PMEC leverages world-class testing capabilities in waves, currents and power systems. Though PMEC does not maintain any testing facilities as a Center, it does have access to the combined testing capabilities of UW, OSU, and UAF, including world-class riverine and wave energy test sites and a purpose-built marine energy research vessel.

O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory

The O.H. Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory at OSU is the largest nearshore experimental facility at an academic institution in the U.S. Established in 1972, is a state-of-the-art Center conducting both applied and fundamental research to address ocean, coastal and nearshore processes via physical model experiments. With two large-scale experimental facilities, the Large Wave Flume and the Directional Wave Basin, investigators are able to perform physical model testing of coastal systems subject to the action of tsunamis, waves, and/or storm surge. Research projects include wave propagation, wave-structure interaction, stability of coastal structures, beach erosion, offshore structures, bio-fouling, floating structures, and testing of renewable energy devices.

PacWave

Located 7 miles off the Pacific coast near Newport, Oregon, PacWave’s mission is to establish and operate the world’s leading wave energy testing facility. As a fully permitted, grid-connected site, PacWave is responsible for providing comprehensive support for testing, research & development, demonstrations, and deployments for wave energy converters (WECs) and other innovative marine technologies. PacWave supports testing clients through site access and formal deployment agreements for both cabled and non-cabled systems.

Tanana River Test Site

The Tanana River Hydrokinetic Test Site (TRTS) is used to test hydrokinetic power generating devices, related technologies, and to characterize the river environment under realistic Alaska river conditions. TRTS includes capabilities for long-duration turbine testing.

Harris Hydraulics Laboratory

The Harris Hydraulic Lab at UW is a fully equipped laboratory for both teaching and research in environmental fluid mechanics, featuring multiple recirculating flumes.

R/V Russell Davis Light

Power Systems Integration Lab

The Power Systems Integration Lab at UAF tests hardware and software components within an integrated grid system at the scale of an Alaskan village power system.

Wallace Energy Systems and Renewables Facility

The WESRF at OSU provides research, testing, and consulting services related to machines and drives, power electronics, hybrid electric vehicles, hydro power, power systems, and renewables.
